Fresh Cut: Dylan Sylwester
Who am I?
Name? Dylan Sylwester
Astrological Sign? Libra
FAVORITES
"I wouldn't mind a healthy cup of tea on the Jail Blazers' era with my meal."
Colors? Blue and mustard yellow
Movies? I'm inspired by The Lobster for its bone-dry, absurd style of humor. I also love feel-good documentaries 😀 and violent, 4-hour mob dramas 🩸.
Bands? My ill-fated high school pop punk cover band, The Slack.
Song? And what's your history with it? "El Scorcho" on Weezer's Pinkerton album (before they devolved into uninspired pop). It taught me that being off-key, full of angst, and yelping like a drowning cat can be artful.
Favorite Foods? Why? Macarons. Each little morsel is crispy/flaky/melty/airy perfection
Favorite Places To Eat? Why? In Portland, I love Eem! Can't beat Thai barbecue and tiki drinks. When I travel, a local food tour is always top of the priority list. I've had most of my favorite meals that way.
Favorite Places On Earth? Why? Anywhere there's sun (Hawaii, Palm Springs, Hood River). Bonus points for being in an arid, pollen-less desert wasteland, a vacation for my habitually-swollen sinuses.
Who would like to meet? Why? Thelma Schoonmaker -- revered, award-winning editor and also edits in... Lightworks??
3 people to have dinner with? They can be dead or alive? Why? Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, Damon Stoudamire -- I wouldn't mind a healthy cup of tea on the Jail Blazers' era with my meal.
On Editing
"Editing is like playing with visual Legos to me."
What are you most proud of? My five-month-old daughter, Charlotte! Thankfully, she inherited all the (recessive) cute genes.
What is something you want to work on? Eating fewer macarons.
What is something you dream of doing? Work? Personal? Both? I dream of one day living in a sun-soaked midcentury house with a big Japanese maple in the center courtyard and enough counter space in the kitchen to put all my coffee gadgets.
Why do you edit? Editing is like playing with visual Legos to me. It's pretty easy to follow the instructions that come with the box, but you can also play with the structure, shape, and color of things!
Final thoughts? I have a background in journalism and love to edit documentaries in addition to commercials. Sometimes it's nice to have longer than 30 seconds to set the mood and dive into a story.
