Fresh Cut: Nick Davis
Who am I?
Name? Nick Davis
Astrological Sign? Cap/Sag - I keep hearing things that lead me to believe that I may be more the latter.
FAVORITES
"David Lynch is my North Star."
Colors? Orange
Movies? David Lynch is my North Star. Mulholland Drive is my favorite.
Bands? When I was young, it was Eagles. When I was a hipster, it was The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Now, I like Classical music.
Song? And what's your history with it? Adagio in D Minor by John Murphy from the Sunshine film score. It's one of those songs that give you all the feels without any words and can be put on any edit to make it feel epic. It's the perfect song.
Favorite Foods? Why? Ice cream. Isn't it everyone's favorite food?
Favorite Places To Eat? Why? Surong. It's a new monthly vegan pop-up in Portland and it knocked my socks off.
Favorite Places On Earth? Why? Home. It is where my heart is.
3 people to have dinner with? They can be dead or alive? Why? Dalai Lama, Quan Yin and Malcolm X. I think it would be a fascinating conversation.
On Editing
"Over the course of the week I spent editing that film, I maybe slept 2-3 hours a night and was editing every minute I was awake. I loved editing from the first moment."
What are you most proud of? I edited a trailer for the HBO series The Pacific that went along with Tom Hanks to the White House to show then-President Obama. They showed him episode 5 of The Pacific and my trailer so he could get the gist of the rest of the series. It was a one-screening-only trailer and I was not allowed to keep it for my reel (this trailer will self-destruct). But, it was still a proud moment. It was a really solid trailer.
What is something you want to work on? I'd like to make my own movie or feature-length documentary. Editing was always partially a path to directing for me, tho I am very content just editing.
What is something you dream of doing? Work? Personal? Both? My dream is to create something that can help people and then lead workshops where I show people how to use the thing that I created. Right now, I feel like shadow work is a calling for me in this world of the dream. That and write a novel.
Why do you edit? The first short film I made was a film called Lemmings. It was shot on 16mm reversal film and edited on a Steenbeck. Over the course of the week I spent editing that film, I maybe slept 2-3 hours a night and was editing every minute I was awake. I loved editing from the first moment.
Anything else you'd like to share? What should the world know?
I love what I do. I enjoy working with ad teams to sell a brand's image. I love editing feature films and shorts because I get to work with some super creative people. I love editing documentaries because so much of the story is in the editor's hands.
But, my favorite editorial medium is the movie trailer. I have been obsessed with them since I was a kid. I enjoyed my time working on bigger studio films, but my heart lies in the indy film world. Getting to help indy filmmakers get their movies seen is my favorite thing to do.
