Open Signal Seminar Recap

How do you get started as a commercial editor? We got you.

Open Signal Seminar Recap

June 11, 2026

How do you find work as a commercial video editor? What do I need to know? How do I get my foot in the door? What’s the process? How do I get paid? What’s expected of me day to day? Does any of this even matter? All valid and important questions to ask when pursuing a job in commercial editing. While some of these are easy to solve and others likely unanswerable, it’s often the case that prospective editors don’t know what questions to ask in the first place. You know, Unknown Unknowns - the questions you don’t even know you should be asking, and that makes it hard to come prepared.

Getting your start is never easy and we recognize that our industry, like any industry, has its endemic jargon and quirks. The industry has specific ways of communicating and operating that are not necessarily clear to the uninitiated. These aren’t talent issues - but the processes and rules that have accreted over the decades, sometimes vestigial to long retired technologies yet still in use - it’s complicated!

While we’d like to claim pure altruism, we recognize that the more prepared, informed, and in-the-know a prospective hire, the more efficient and seamless the onboarding process. You benefit, we benefit, and we can all find success together. Win, Win, Win!

As a first step in sharing our findings, we presented this information to a group of 30 folks at Open Signal, a media arts center in Portland, OR. In addition to our half-an-hour presentation we spent over an hour afterwards addressing questions and working through scenarios. Based on the immediate feedback and subsequent emails, our efforts weren’t completely in vain.

We want to share this information with you, if you’re interested. If the answer is “definitely,” “heck yes,” or even “sure” then we’ll send you the PDF of our full presentation. Please email us - lucky@luckyday.tv and put 'Editors Workshop' in the subject line and we’ll get back to you. If you get anything out of it, have input or we missed something, speak up. Maybe it will even lead to one of those Win, Win, Win situations? Who knows?! 🌟
